Centennial High School is the newest of five prototype high schools opened between 1990 and 1997 that were designed by dwb architects (now a part of brph) with mechanical design by Brewer and Skala (now Jordan & Skala). The schools incorporated very good building envelope design and water source heat pumps to serve the classroom areas that provide excellent room temperature control. Centennial incorporated regenerative desiccant wheel energy recovery units that pretreat the outside air, which further enhances humidity control. This system provides efficiency by transferring heat from interior zones to exterior zones through the condenser water loop, which reduces the required operating hours of the supplemental heat boilers. Areas of the building that are routinely occupied after normal hours such as the gyms, auditorium, and main office have independent HVAC systems. The building also has an extensive Building Automation System that enables optimal operation of the HVAC system to provide proper environments for the school functions. 

Centennial High School is one of 41 school buildings in Fulton County School System to earn the ENERGY STAR in 2008. This remarkable commitment to energy efficiency applies to both new and existing buildings. In addition to building efficient new schools such as Centennial High School, Fulton County School System has renovated several schools using funding from a Special Local Option Sales Tax. Fulton County Schools has continued to incorporate best practices in new school construction as well as major renovation projects, including technologies such as high efficiency water source heat pumps, high efficiency boilers, variable volume pumping, desiccant-based energy recovery units for outside air supplies, variable volume air supply systems, occupancy sensors, day-lighting, and reflective roof surfaces. In 2000, the school system completed a system-wide lighting retrofit that converted all fluorescent lighting from magnetically ballasted T-12 lamps to high efficiency electronically ballasted T-8 lamps and replaced most of the incandescent lighting with T-8 or compact fluorescent lamps.

Fulton County Schools is committed to good stewardship of natural resources and the taxpayers funding through the operation of efficient buildings while maintaining high levels of building occupant comfort.
