Pepper Ridge Elementary opened in 1992 with an addition in 1998 that brought the school more than 61,624 square feet. The building has a traditional four-pipe HVAC system, and was not designed with energy efficiency in mind. However, after McLean County Unit District No. 5 began a conservation program headed by Energy Education, Inc., (currently Cenergistic, Inc.) the building occupants began taking measures to help improve efficiency. Despite the system, the building achieved a $1.137 per square foot energy cost the past year and an ENERGY STAR energy performance score of 67, an ambitious achievement for this type structure and HVAC system. This site cost $1.952 per square foot in the base of performance (2004-2005).
Naturally, much of the credit is due the staff members and more than 430 K-5 students who worked diligently to practice energy conservation techniques. Also, with less money spent on utilities, there are more funds for other priorities, namely to promote better student learning.
