Heards Ferry Elementary School opened in 1972 and received a major classroom addition in 1986. The original building mechanical system is primarily served by chilled water-cooled air handling units and PIU reheat boxes, and the 1986 addition is served by water source heat pumps. The original building system was overhauled in 2010 to include variable frequency drives on the air handling units and pressure independent airflow control for zone temperature control. The school has a robust direct digital control building automation system by Automated Logic Corporation. The building sits on 17 acres adjacent to Riverwood High School in Sandy Springs.
