An Energy Awareness program has been a key part of Cambridge Savings' energy management strategy. We combine employee education with contests and rewards to make energy-smart behavior a part of every employee's workday. The result has been a 19-percent reduction in energy usage over a 5-year period. The energy efficiency projects completed by Cambridge Savings include the following:
-- As part of a recent maintenance upgrade, two 25-ton rooftop units were replaced with new high-efficiency equipment with enthalpy controls. This improvement will save the bank $2,300 per year and garnered a $3,000 rebate from NStar Electric.
-- The old lighting system was causing employee complaints about glare and visual discomfort. We were able to install new fixtures that both save energy and provide better lighting for the modern office. Under their Small Commercial/Industrial Program, NStar paid for 70 percent of the project cost. The return on investment (ROI) on the bank's portion of the project was 3.1 years, saving $4,500 annually.
-- In 2008, we installed 9.3 kW of solar photovoltaic panels on the roof. These modules are expected to generate 10,500 kWh of electricity per year, saving $1,950 annually with an emissions reduction of 7 tons of carbon dioxide. This project was aided by a grant from the Massachusetts Technology Council.
These projects will help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 37 tons per year, which is the equivalent of planting 825 mature trees.
"Cambridge Savings Bank is a national leader on the energy efficiency front. Through operational changes and a top-to-bottom staff commitment, CSB has achieved dramatic energy savings that are improving the bank's bottom line and the environment at the same time."-- Ira Leighton, Deputy Regional Administrator, US EPA, Region 1
