The Mt. Vernon Federal Building in Mt. Vernon, IL, houses a wide variety of Federal agencies, including the Social Security Administration, the US Geological Survey, the Internal Revenue Service, and the General Services Administration (GSA). The two-story building was built in 1973 and is owned and operated the GSA.
Since its construction, energy efficiency measures were implemented to meet mandated reduction goals and to reduce operating expenses. The systems of the building are continually monitored and adjusted by an Energy Management System (EMS) to provide optimum operation. Energy efficient products are used in any alterations that are done. The building uses several small boilers instead of one or two larger units that enable increased flexibility in satisfying varying heat loads. Other upgrades that contributed to the building achieving the ENERGY STAR Label for Buildings include a new cooling system, lighting retrofits, Variable Frequency Drives, and different chiller configurations.
"The current efficiencies enjoyed at the labeled buildings in our region are the result of over 15 years worth of examination, evaluation, and implementation of energy saving philosophies and ideas. When considering equipment replacements we encourage thinking outside of the box. It is this thinking that has resulted in some unique equipment applications that have proven to be beneficial in reducing both energy and maintenance costs."

The awarding of the ENERGY STAR Label for Buildings is a reflection of the efforts of maintenance and property management staff to reduce energy consumption while maintaining a comfortable work environment for tenants.
