The Milwaukee Federal Building and US Courthouse in Milwaukee, WI, provides offices for a number of Federal government agencies and courts, including the Immigration and Naturalization Service, the Secret Service, the Marshall Service, and several District and Bankruptcy Courts. Federal employees working at the building are fortunate in two ways: the 100-year-old historical building is breathtakingly beautiful and it is among the most energy efficient commercial and governmental buildings in the nation.
The building has more than 480,000 square feet of office space for its 450 occupants. Jeff Claassen of the General Services Administration attributes the building's energy efficiency success to a staff dedicated to saving on energy costs and to recent energy efficiency retrofits and enhancements.
"We wanted to show that a 100-year-old historical structure can be energy efficient. It was simply the right thing to do."
Jeff Claassen (GSA)
The building's T-12 fluorescent lamps were replaced with highly efficient T-8s, the Energy Management System was enhanced to provide tighter control of the building's systems, variable frequency drives were installed in all air handling units, new highly efficient motors were retrofitted into all air handling units, and new chillers were installed.
