The Carbondale Federal Building in Carbondale, IL, is the home of a wide range of Federal agencies, including the Internal Revenue Service, the Social Security Administration, the Federal Aviation Administration, and the U.S. Congressional Offices. The General Services Administration (GSA) owns and operates the three-story building.
Since it's construction in 1978, energy efficiency measures were implemented to meet mandated reduction goals and to reduce operating expenses. The systems of the building are continually monitored and adjusted by an Energy Management System (EMS) provide optimum operation. Energy efficient products are used in alterations that are done. The building uses ten small boilers instead of one or two larger units that enable increase flexibility in satisfying varying heat loads. Other upgrades that contributed to the building achieving the Energy Star Label for Buildings include a new cooling system, lighting retrofits, Variable Frequency Drives, and different chiller configurations.
"The current efficiencies enjoyed at the labeled buildings in our region are the result of over 15 years worth of examination, evaluation, and implementation of energy saving philosophies and ideas. When considering equipment replacements we encouraged thinking outside the box. The awarding of the ENERGY STAR Label is a reflection of the effort maintenance and property management staff to reduce energy consumption while maintaining a comfortable work environment its tenants.
