Cincinnati Financial Corporation stands among the top property casualty insurers in the nation, based on net written premiums. Cincinnati Financial Corporation's 1.2 million square-foot headquarters is located in Fairfield, Ohio, about 20 miles northwest of Cincinnati. The building includes three interconnected office towers, each with nine floors. Management broke ground for the first tower in 1985, followed by completion of the second in 1999 and the third in 2008.
Throughout the construction of all three towers, energy conservation measures included the engineering, procurement, and installation of energy-efficient equipment, including:
-- High-efficiency centrifugal chillers
-- Variable speed drives for HVAC equipment
-- Zoned variable air volume units
The HVAC systems of all towers are now fully automated through a BACnet energy management system. The company's management recognized the need to update tower I to improve energy efficiency and in 2010, facility managers replaced large, inefficient air-handling unit fan motors with fan walls of multiple, smaller horsepower motors equipped with variable speed drive controls. This measure improved energy efficiency and provided an N+1 tier for the fans in these units.
The company's management continues to rely on ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager, along with other resources for benchmarking, to explore energy reduction initiatives. Below are highlights from projects undertaken to optimize the use of facility equipment and the energy management system.
2012: Installed water-side economizer to provide free cooling for the entire building during the winter months. This measure was projected to achieve an improvement in energy efficiency of more than 221,000 kWh, as well as annual energy cost savings of approximately $17,000.
2013: Replaced electrical switchgear in tower 1 to provide sub-metering capabilities.
2014: Completed a retrofit of pneumatic HVAC system controls with direct digital controls in towers I and II, and replacement of aerators for all lavatory and break room faucets and coffee stations.
2015: Earned Silver LEED EBOM certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
2016: Added energy-efficient window film in all exterior stairwells (approximately 17,000 square feet) to reduce solar energy gain.
Cincinnati Financial Corporation's dedication to investigating in and pursuing energy efficiency projects was recognized in December 2014, when Duke Energy presented its Power Partner award based on Cincinnati Financial Corporation's commitment to responsible energy use and creating lasting value through energy reduction. Cincinnati Financial Corporation was also honored by the Cincinnati Business Courier with the 2015 Green Business Award in the Large Private/Public Company category.
