Elementary opened in the fall of 2008 as a single-floor facility
with 85,896 square feet. It has eight rooftop air-conditioning
units, two condensing boilers, and variable air-volume terminal
units in most of the building. Two rooftop units are constant volume.
The facility was
designed to meet the energy codes in place 2 years ago. Windows
were situated to enhance daylighting. Fluorescent fixtures were
used throughout the facility, including the multi-purpose area.
The lighting is T-8 bulbs with dual switching between inboard and
outboard bulbs.
The school's
energy use was reduced 4.5 percent during the second year of
operation by adjusting the operational hours as we became more
familiar with the building and by conversing with staff and
students about how they can help conserve energy without impeding
the school's function.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board
of Education continues to raise energy-consumption awareness and
to use that awareness to reduce energy consumption.
