CH2M HILL?s facilities management team identified opportunities for improvement and implemented them with Columbia? approval.
Some efficiency gains were accomplished through improved operations and maintenance and other low-cost practices. Employees were instructed on how to manage temperature for individual comfort by adjusting existing louvered blinds and dressing for individual comfort levels, reducing the need for thermostat adjustment in individual areas.
The CH2M HILL facilities management team assessed the North Building?s baseline energy performance benchmarking in 2008 using ENERGY STAR?s Portfolio Manager tool, which returned a score of 74 ? just one point short of the 75 necessary to earn ENERGY STAR certification. Improvements were implemented, improving the score to its current 83. The CH2M HILL North Building was first awarded ENERGY STAR certification in 2010.
CH2M HILL is reaching out to employees to spread the word that energy efficiency is good for the bottom line and the environment. The firm?s North American Environmental Management System publicizes the energy conservation measures and resulting savings throughout the firm. CH2M HILL also reports energy usage and resulting environmental impacts as a member of the United Nations Global Compact. The report, which is updated yearly, can be viewed on CH2M HILL?s website.
