MUSKOGEE COMMUNITY HOSPITAL
2900 NORTH MAIN
MUSKOGEE, OK 74401
Muskogee Community Hospital (MCH) was built with an environmentally friendly approach in mind. MCH is heated and cooled using 100 percent ground source geothermal energy. During construction, MCH recycled 77 percent of construction waste, totaling 1,019,480 pounds of recycled plastic, wood, metal, cardboard, and other products. MCH focused on eliminating materials identified as allergens, mutagens, carcinogens, and endocrine disrupters because of their profound effect on patients, staff, and visitors. Recycled content was used in the ceiling tiles, carpet, flooring, steel, concrete, and insulation to protect our resources. This approach allowed MCH to eliminate all smells associated with new construction by eliminating or using low volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the building specifications, thus creating cleaner air to breathe for the patients, guests, and employees. MCH is the first hospital to install Ultra Violet lights (UV-C) in each of the 77 individual heating and air conditioning units, which eliminate over 99 percent of airborne bacteria. MCH also is the first hospital to install UV-C lights in the operating rooms and procedure rooms to kill all surface bacteria. The goal is to become the benchmark for infection control in hospitals.
MCH has taken huge steps to protect the environment as well. MCH has its own sanitary sewer system that recaptures treated water and irrigates the native grasses, trees, shrubs, and flowers. In step with being 24 percent more efficient than a normal hospital is the ability to control each of the 77 separate heating and air conditioning units electronically, measuring their output, temperature, and functionality. This gives the building management team the ability to manage the building more efficiently from a remote location.
