Southface monitors the energy and water performance of the Eco Office on a 24/7 basis using Lucid Design Group's Building Dashboard?. The facility is fully instrumented to record its electricity consumption; daily kilowatt hours of electricity produced onsite through its photovoltaic solar array; daily gallons of water consumed and saved; current rainwater levels in its cisterns; and more.
Built by a consortium of construction firms using widely available, off-the-shelf products, materials, and technologies, the Eco Office is a 3-story structure with a green roof. It adjoins the Southface Resource Center via a glass atrium. The Resource Center presents more than 100 green building technologies and was awarded the ENERGY STAR for superior energy performance in 2000.
During the first year of Eco Office operations, Southface also provided energy data for EPA's Portfolio Manager, an energy management tool that compares the performance of similar buildings nationwide.
The Southface Eco Office was officially opened in 2009 after earning the ENERGY STAR, as well as Platinum Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED?) certification from the U.S. Green Building Council and EarthCraft Light Commercial certification, a regional green building designation specific to the Southeast. It also meets The 2030 Challenge launched by the non-profit group Architecture 2030.
Communications:
The Eco Office opened with a "vine cutting" and press conference, plus VIP and community receptions. In-person and online building tours, green meeting space rentals, and a press Web site with social media tools provide ongoing outreach. Phase two PR will invite the engineering community to study the building's continued performance.
Testimonial:
"The Eco Office is a laudable example of replicable, cost-effective green commercial construction, an example that if widely followed, will help facilitate the creation of numerous green jobs, and will strengthen the economic, social, and environmental competitiveness of this city."
