The Boise Federal Building and US Post Office, built in 1968 in Boise, ID, was awarded the ENERGY STAR Label for Buildings due to a recent whole building upgrade and re-commissioning of the almost 40-year-old structure.
During the re-commissioning, the seven-story building, which houses offices of the General Services Administration, was retrofitted with lighting upgrades (T-8 fluorescent tubes and electronic ballasts) and was given a building tune-up. Strategies to reduce load were implemented, and the building's heating fuel was switched from natural gas to a geothermal heat source.
These measures cost approximately $250,000 and have saved the facility approximately $33,000 per year on its energy costs. A payback of 7.5 years is expected.
