1550 Main was built in 1982 to house the U.S. Federal Court house and various government agencies. The Massachusetts Development Finance Agency, the state?s largest economic development and public financing agency, purchased 1550 Main as a redevelopment project in September 2009 from the General Services Administration (GSA). The building is 92 percent occupied by four tenants: The City of Springfield School Department central offices, Baystate Medical Centers support staff, Macmillan & Son and the GSA for some federal agencies including Senators Warren and Cowan, IRS, Federal Protective Services and Immigration and Criminal Enforcement.
Renovation completed in 2010 included new
landscaping with water conservation measures, installation of T-8 lamps in
tenant spaces, and a complete lobby redesign including energy efficient
lighting and new elevators. In 2013, the garage fixtures were converted from
130 watt High Pressure Sodium bulbs to 60 watt LED fixtures, which allowed ten
fixtures to be eliminated. The stairwells and loading dock fixtures were
converted from 2-32 watt T8 to 1-25W Low Power Ballast.
