Athens Area High School, part of the Athens Area School District, is a 173,000-square-foot facility that educates more than 600 students a year. Constructed in 2004, the school underwent several modifications and upgrades in order to increase its energy efficiency through simple measures such as setting thermostat points, installing lighting timers and outdoor lighting controls, performing a comprehensive audit of the building's energy use, and educating students and staff about energy-efficient practices.  Through tracking energy data and identifying opportunities to increase energy efficiency, Athens Area High School has saved $367,000 in operating costs since its baseline year of 2005-2006 and prevented more than 1,500 metric tons of carbon emissions.

The Athens Area School District has committed to improving its energy efficiency with the help of Energy Education, Inc. and the ENERGY STAR program.  Energy Education provides guidance and staff support to help develop and implement energy efficiency policies and practices, all while using no-cost tools and resources from ENERGY STAR to achieve a greater level of performance.
