St. Andrew's Episcopal Church was founded in 1919, and the first structure was built in 1920. The facility was further developed over the following three decades and by 1950, the building included a day school, parish hall, and rectory. In 1957, the main church was completely replaced by a modern structure with a slate roof.
Since then, the church, parish hall, and school have undergone a number of major renovations, including upgrading air conditioning, heating, windows, and doors, and improving handicap access to all parts of the facility. Since 2009, the congregation and staff members have initiated and implemented a number of energy efficiency and recycling strategies, which have included using compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) whenever possible instead of incandescent bulbs, setting back thermostats when areas are not in use, and following an aggressive program of heating and cooling system maintenance.
In 2011, Saint Andrew's Episcopal School staff members committed to being more deliberate about saving energy. As the school occupies about 45 percent of the facility, improving energy efficiency at the school was a critical step towards achieving ENERGY STAR certification.
In 2013 we made a major update to our heating system and reduced our energy used for heating by about 25 percent. This was key to achieving a seven-point increase in our ENERGY STAR rating for 2014.
Future plans include include replacing our remaining incandescents in the church proper with LEDs and the swapping out of existing CFLs for LEDs. The timing will be driven by life-cycle costs.
In addition to energy efficiency efforts, St. Andrew's has also been diligent about recycling all waste by providing convenient recycling containers next to every waste receptacle on site.
