The Islamic Society of Boston Cultural Center (ISBCC) in Roxbury, MA is the first mosque in America to receive ENERGY STAR certification. Construction of the building began in 2004 and was completed in 2008. Approximately 67,000-square-feet, the building hosts a mosque and an Islamic cultural center. The building features accommodation for 4,000 worshippers and includes space for worship, multi-function halls and retail spaces.
Derived from the original traditions of Islam, energy conservation is of great concern to the Muslim American Society and the Islamic Society of Boston Cultural Center. Facility management has developed many different energy-saving initiatives such as the recycling program, purchasing of more energy efficient appliances in the kitchen and offices and putting signage in areas such as bathrooms and classroom to remind members to conserve whenever possible. The ISBCC is also a member of the Massachusetts Interfaith Power and Light (MIP&L), a national organization that assists congregations with better environmental stewardship practices. By taking advantage of their local utility company?s energy-efficiency programs, the ISBCC received electrical and gas audits at no cost. The MIP&L and utility assessments helped to identify areas of improvement and led to the upgrade of more than 70 percent of the lights in the building, installation of motion sensors in bathrooms, and reducers on the faucets to save on water and energy.
The congregation members are encouraged to use natural light whenever possible and to minimize waste in the building. The ISBCC has actively taken advantage of all resources available and participated in other national initiatives such as Earth Hour, a global sustainability movement during which more than 50 million people across 35 countries/territories turn off their lights for an entire hour. The ISBCC became an ENERGY STAR partner in June of 2010, and has since used the free technical support and resources offered by ENERGY STAR such as online webinars on benchmarking Houses of Worship. The ISBCC is currently installing solar panels on the roof and anticipates energy savings of 20 to 30 percent from their current use.
