Avalon The Albemarle is a collection of apartment homes in Washington DC. It offers residents studio, one- and two-bedroom downtown apartments with practical features that include central heat and air conditioning, storage space, walk-in closets, modern appliances, and private balconies or patios. The building, constructed in 1966, is owned and managed by AvalonBay Communities Inc.
As part of our corporate-wide sustainability efforts, we believe in building stronger and more sustainable communities. We know that energy is an appreciable component of our operating costs and those of our residents, so we strive to improve building energy efficiency, reduce water consumption, and cut our waste.
Our Corporate Responsibility efforts, which include our Environmental Sustainability efforts, are led by our Senior Director of Sustainability, Mark Delisi. But it is really a team effort from across all functions in the company: development, construction, and residential services.
To improve the energy performance of the building, we conducted an ASHRAE Level 2 Energy Audit on the building to identify areas of opportunity for improvement. This resulted in a number of identified projects which we continue to implement. In addition, some time ago, we retrofitted the building to take advantage of more efficient lighting options. We plan to continue to do this as LED lighting technology becomes a more viable option.
