The Orchard Hotel is an upscale boutique hotel in downtown San Francisco. Built in 2000, management has always been focused on balancing energy efficiency with customer service and satisfaction. Included in the hotel's energy efficiency features are ENERGY STAR certified appliances, low-flow water fixtures, waterless urinals, Dyson hand dryers, energy-efficient lighting, bi-level stairwell lighting that only turns on when needed, and improvements to the chiller's motor. Beyond the energy efficiency features, management also employs a number of other sustainability features, including:

Using organic cleaning products
Using local and organic ingredients whenever possible
Purchasing Verified Emissions Reductions to offset the hotel's carbon impact
Banning smoking in the hotel
Using 100% recycled paper and ink
Composting all waste materials
Replacing plastic amenity bottles with resusable bottles
Supporting and encouraging the use of alternative transportation

In addition to the actions listed above, the hotel also partners with Plant a Billion Trees to plant a tree for each new Orchard Hotel review posted on TripAdvisor, whether favorable or not.

Orchard Hotel conducted an ASHRAE Level 1 Energy Audit in April 2014 and implemented all of the low cost measures outlined in the audit. This in additon to enrolling in Demand Response Porgram by PG&E, helped reduce the energy usage considerably and improve the Energy Star Score. Some of these EEMs are listed below:

32W T8 lamps with Normal Ballast Factor were replaced with 28W T8 lamps with Lower Ballast Factor.

The facility was lit by MR16 lamps in the lobby and common areas and with 100W halogen lamps in the guestroom hallways. These were replaced by high efficiency LEDs.

The stairwells at Orchard were lit by 32W 48"long T8 lamps that were on continuously. These were replaced by bilevel fixtures equipped with occupancy sensors. These would run at a level until an occupant entered the stairwell and then boost the light output to maximum level.
