In 1900, the hotelier and impresario Lucias Boomer (best
known as the owner of New Yorks Waldorf - Astoria) began
work on what was to become the most luxurious hotel in New
England. Eight months and $1,100,000 later, The Lenox - the
tallest building in Boston at the time - opened its doors in
the heart of Back Bay and a proud tradition was born.
Since 1963, three generations of the Saunders family have been at the helm of The Lenox, overseeing day-to-day operations, a series of meticulous restorations and groundbreaking environmental achievements.
The Saunders Hotel Group's (SHG) mission is to Preserve The Past and Protect The Future TM. Working cooperatively with Team Members (employees), suppliers, stakeholders and the community they manage The Lenox Hotel with "best of class"standards. SHG does this while providing a superior work environment for employees, and outstanding service and product for guests. SHG consistently gives back to the community through a commitment to numerous charities, civic and environmental causes.
The Lenox Hotel as a Superior Energy Manager
The Saunders Hotel Group employs an Environmental Coordinator
who is extensively educated on environmental issues. In an urban
setting, our focus is on reducing resource consumption, and
educating guests, employees and the community. Most of the planning
and coordination for these efforts is managed through Green Teams at
each hotel. SHG is devoted to working with managers and front-line
employees to monitor the life-cycle impact of daily business
practices, and discover additional opportunities to reduce our
environmental footprint.
SHG's award winning environmental program includes the following five components:
? Implement innovative energy efficiency measures;
? Minimize solid waste through source reduction and aggressive recycling/reuse;
? Actively conserve water resources;
? Purchase environmentally friendly products and services; and
? Educate guests, employees, our competitors, and the public.
SHG focuses on energy efficiency technologies and practices in lighting, HVAC, hot water, kitchens, and pools with paybacks between 1 and 4 years. SHG monitors and reports monthly on the use of resources (natural gas, electricity, water and waste) to ensure that efficiency initiatives are effective.
Why Work with ENERGY STAR?
ENERGY STAR is a widely recognized brand that our guests know and appreciate. The program offers numerous energy management ideas, products, and measurement tools. It was simple to initiate our participation and provided a high return with recognition and money saved. The ENERGY STAR program has been a win-win for The Lenox Hotel and Saunders Hotel Group.

Testimonial:
"ENERGY STAR is one of our best partners in helping us saving money and reducing our environmental impact. Their web site is rich with ideas and products. The Building Portfolio Manager is a simple and wonderfully useful tool. It encourages us to set goals and document our usage, and reports comparative energy and water usage in an exciting way. We look forward to many more years of collaboration."
