Hotel Carlton is a 161-room boutique hotel located at 1075 Sutter Street in San Francisco, California on lower Nob Hill. The hotel is managed by Joie de Vivre Hospitality, which promotes sustainability throughout its properties through the 'Joie de Vivre Green Dreams' environmental initiative. The company's website includes a dedicated Joie de Vivre Green Dreams portal featuring the company's green policies and practices, a green certification 'scorecard' for hotels, green travel tips, and links to environmental resources.
Hotel Carlton has adopted a variety of energy-efficient practices. The hotel's daily operations comply with all voluntary environmental regulations that conserve natural resources, prevent pollution, and reduce waste. Motion sensors, low-flow shower heads, and low-flow toilets are installed in guest rooms to conserve energy and water, and compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) are used throughout the hotel. Guests at the Hotel Carlton have the option of re-using their towels and linens rather than having them laundered daily, thereby further eliminating energy waste. Additional hotel initiatives to reduce environmental impact include a popular turn-key green meetings program and the purchase of carbon credits to offset all carbon usage.
In 2008, Hotel Carlton partnered with San Francisco-based Sunlight Electric to install a solar panel array on its rooftop, thereby becoming San Francisco's first hotel to feature solar panels. The array generates 12 percent of the hotel's electricity usage, and guests are able to monitor the total energy generated using a computer monitor stationed at the hotel's front desk. This solar power system was designed to reduce the release of carbon into the environment by 15 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent annually, which is equivalent to the amount sequestered by more than 380 tree seedlings planted and grown for 10 years. The remaining balance of energy consumed by the hotel is offset through the hotel's participation with Carbonfund.org, making Hotel Carlton's entire operation carbon-neutral.
Hotel Carlton received a score of 100 on a 1 to 100 scale using Portfolio Manager, EPA's ENERGY STAR measurement and tracking tool. Additionally, the hotel is LEED-EB O&M Gold certified, making it the highest rated hotel by LEED standards in San Francisco.
