Opened in 1981, the Hyatt Regency New Brunswick was originally an all-electric facility. In 2006, the energy management team began its efforts to improve energy efficiency and earn the ENERGY STAR for superior energy performance. A capital improvement plan that emphasized energy conservation was put into place, which was intended to replace worn out facilities equipment with state-of-the-art energy-efficient technologies.
A number of projects were completed, including upgrading variable air volume (VAV) and direct digital control (DDC) controls on both air handling equipment and VAVs. Central utility upgrades included the conversion of electric boilers to high efficiency natural gas. The chiller plant was upgraded with high efficiency chillers controlled by variable speed drives. A 421KW photovoltaic system was also installed. Additionally, high efficiency motors and variable frequency drives (VFDs) were installed on all major air handling equipment, as well as the hot water reheat and chilled water systems.
