DMC Detroit Receiving Hospital is Michigan’s first Level 1 Trauma Center, possessing one of the busiest and most well-equipped emergency departments. Detroit Receiving is a 273-bed hospital located in Midtown Detroit, and is home to the oldest and largest verified burn center in the state of Michigan. Detroit Receiving is physically connected with University Health Center, which houses several outpatient clinics, including OB/GYN, Geriatrics, and Diabetes. The Center also has extensive lab research and processing areas.

Starting 2013, DMC Detroit Receiving Hospital's management set a goal to become more energy efficient, striving to earn ENERGY STAR certification. To move toward this goal, management took the following actions:

• Changed all outdoor lighting to sensor controlled and LED fixtures
• Upgraded internal lighting to LED
• Replaced the roof on both Detroit Receiving Hospital/University Health Center and added insulation, which enhances energy savings
• Insulated piping and duct work in all patient care areas
• Installed new hot water expansion tanks
• Added Variable Frequency Drives to all air handlers and hot water heating pumps
• Renovated all water pumping systems
• Installed more energy-efficient chillers for the cooling systems
• Replaced heat exchanges to more efficient equipment
• Continued installing automatic lighting controls in all office areas and storage rooms

These initiatives result in less energy use every year and utility savings of nearly $85,000 per year.
