The Stanley Black & Decker Rialto Distribution Center is located in Rialto, California, approximately 50 miles east of Los Angeles. The facility is a single-story, 543,000-square-foot distribution center for Black & Decker, Dewalt, Porter Cable, and Bostitch professional and consumer power tools, lawn & garden tools, and fasteners. While there are some automatic stretch wrap machines, the majority of products are received, picked and moved manually on electric forklifts. The building has 380 rooftop skylights and a light sensor that shuts off lighting when the ambient light is sufficient for warehouse operations. The main warehouse is neither heated nor air conditioned. Stanley Black & Decker moved from a smaller facility in Rancho Cucamonga, CA, into the Rialto Distribution Center in late 2004. The building is leased from Prologis under a long-term lease agreement. The distribution center has a two-shift operation, Monday through Friday, with on-site security 24/7.
In 2010, it was determined that the distribution center should pursue a project to replace the existing 650 438 watt Metal Halide light fixtures with 234 watt T5 Florescent light fixtures. Over the next year and a half, those fixtures were replaced by the in-house maintenance team. In addition, each light fixture has a proximity sensor that shuts off the individual fixture when there is no activity in that area. It is estimated that the new fixtures reduced annual electrical consumption by 500,000 kWh, saving approximately $53,000 per year.
The naturally low energy consumption of the Rialto Distribution Center coupled with this lighting upgrade project resulted in a 42 point increase over the 2010 energy consumption baseline to achieve a score of 95 on the building?s first EPA Energy Star application.
