In June 2009, Henderson County Public Schools initiated an energy conservation program focusing on behavior modification, which has resulted in a system-wide decrease in energy usage. The program has seen a 16 percent reduction in energy use. Regular energy audits score the schools on their energy conservation efforts and provide staff members with constant feedback.
Built in 1981, Atkinson Elementary was designed to utilize passive solar energy. Atkinson has recently experienced a lighting upgrade from HID to T-8 and new energy-efficient windows were installed. In 2009, two new high-efficiency, non-condensing boilers were also installed.
