The school design includes rooftop units with a hydronic (natural gas) heating and dehumidification system. This allows Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools to zone areas of use, so that only the parts of the building that are in use are heated or cooled. The building environment is set by direct digital controls (DDCs). The lighting utilizes T8 fluorescent bulbs in most areas, and T5 high-output fluorescent bulbs in the multipurpose room.
The building energy use for the school's first full year of operation (2009-2010) was 53 kBtu per square foot, which included move-in and commissioning. For the 2010-2011 year, a reduction to 48 kBtu per square foot is anticipated. The savings have been realized by staff and students, who are diligent in keeping lights off when not in use and keeping doors closed.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools began communicating each school's energy usage to a designated energy coordinator in each school in the 2009-2010 school year. This has proven to be an effective tool to involve staff in energy conservation, and the district hopes to see staff and students practice similar conservation measures at home.
