One
AtlanticCenter is a 50-story, 1.1 million-square-foot office
building and a fixture of the Midtown Atlanta skyline. Designed by
Philip Johnson and John Burgee and completed in 1987, One Atlantic
Center is clad in rose-colored Spanish granite and crowned with a
pyramidal copper roof. Gothic crenellations near the building crown
add another distinctive feature. The building is set in a
two-and-a-half acre landscaped park; inside, a soaring three-story
granite-and-marble lobby provides a dramatic entry to the building
for tenants and visitors.
One
AtlanticCenter earned the ENERGY STAR for superior energy
performance as a result of a series of coordinated retrofits and
upgrades to the building's energy-consuming infrastructure. On the
lighting side, incandescent lamps throughout were replaced with
high-efficiency fluorescent bulbs. HVAC was another focus of the
work, with variable frequency drives (VFDs) added to air handling
units and cooling tower fansĀ helping them to operate at levels
closely corresponding to actual demand. Finally, building engineers
actively manage equipment operation and scheduling, helping to
ensure the most efficient possible operation.
