The more than 125 full-time staff members who call the Dam Neck Landscape Management building home provide leadership and essential support services for the teams that provide landscape maintenance for all City of Virginia Beach properties. These properties include 272 parks and natural areas, 155 miles of divided roadway, 92 school facilities, and a 5.5-mile-long oceanfront resort.
As the 11-year-old building was due for upgrades, the City implemented the following measures to improve the facility’s energy performance:
-- HVAC control improvements
-- Ceiling and wall occupancy sensors
-- Occupancy sensors on vending machines
-- Replacement of approximately 390 computers and replacement of all old cathode ray tube (CRT) computer monitors with energy saving liquid crystal diode (LCD) monitors
Before the retrofits, the Human Services building had a baseline ENERGY STAR energy performance score of 54. Once the retrofits were completed, the score rose to 79. The implemented energy efficiency measures equated to an energy improvement of more than 30 percent, with an expected savings of more than $25,000 annually.
In order to continue to achieve success with ENERGY STAR, the City of Virginia Beach has implemented temperature setpoint settings for all facilities, as follows:
