The City of Virginia Beach is pleased to announce that the Virginia Beach Human Services Building, located at 3432 Virginia Beach Boulevard, has earned EPA's ENERGY STAR. This distinction means that the building performs in the top 25 percent of similar facilities nationwide for energy efficiency and meets energy efficiency performance levels set by EPA.
With more than 50,000 visitors annually, the Human Services Building provides essential support services for the community. As the 15-year-old building was due for upgrades, the city implemented the following measures to improve the facility's energy performance:
-- Implementing mprovements to HVAC controls;
-- Installing ceiling and wall occupancy sensors;
-- Installing occupancy sensors on vending machines; and
-- Replacing approximately 390 computers and upgrading computer monitors to energy-efficient LCD monitors.
The retrofits helped the building's ENERGY STAR score improve by 25 points. The energy efficiency measures equated to an energy improvement of more than 30 percent, with an expected savings of more than $25,000 annually. In addition to the energy-saving measures listed above, the city utilizes setpoints to acheive energy efficiency while maintaining occupant comfort, and to continue to acheive ENERGY STAR certification.
