After a four-year procurement, LCOR was selected in June 2000 by the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) to construct a new headquarters for the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The 15 acre, 2.4 million square foot, state-of-the-art campus located in Alexandria, Virginia began occupancy in 2003 and was completed in late 2004. As the prime contractor, LCOR oversaw a team of 30 consultants in all aspects of design, engineering and construction.
The facility was conceived with energy conservation in mind from the start and contains five linked buildings for approximately 9,000 USPTO employees. The beautifully designed campus includes a full service cafeteria, a cafe and concession stand, a USPTO museum, and Dulany Gardens - all open to the public. The complex is arranged in a "U" formation around a green garden park. To achieve the "U" shape, four pavilion style buildings flank the campus leading to the fifth signature building that is crowned with an atrium that separates the two wings of this central building. LCOR earned the prestigious ENERGY STAR award for the USPTO Headquarters as a result of careful thought to energy economy during design and a best practices approach by on-site LCOR property management staff. Significant energy efficiency features of the facility include a campus wide chilled water loop, enthalpy wheel rotary air-to-air heat exchangers in each building which allow the recovery of energy from conditioned building exhaust air, high efficiency motors with variable frequency drives, and state of the art building and lighting controls.Communications:
