The bank follows a multi-pronged approach to optimizing building efficiency. When renovating or building a banking center, management utilizes high-efficiency equipment. Maintenance staff members, in conjunction with the mechanical maintenance contractor, perform regular tune-ups of the HVAC and control systems. In the past, management received complaints about glare and visual discomfort as a result of old lighting systems. After installing new fixtures, the bank now saves energy and provides better lighting for employees. The electric utility, Eversource, paid for 80 percent of the project cost. The return on investment (ROI) on the bank’s portion of the project was 3.1 years, saving $4,500 annually.
The bank’s energy awareness program—Conservation Saves Bucks—has been a key part of Cambridge Savings' energy management strategy. Management combines employee education with contests and rewards to make energy-smart behavior a part of every employee's workday.
