Map It!
Built during the post-WWII boom, Oak Grove Elementary contains almost 50-year-old heating and cooling equipment. Johnson Controls Metasys? building automation system now monitors and adjusts the facility according to weather conditions. During the summer months, the air conditioning is used only in occupied areas during the annual cleanup. The staff is very conscientious about energy conservation -- teachers have been trained about its benefits and regularly turn lights off when leaving the room. Hall lights have been retrofitted from T-12 fluorescent lamps to more efficient T-8 lamps. The district also is affiliated with Energy Education, Inc.
Communications:
In 2002, the school building earned the ENERGY STAR Label, the first elementary school building in Virginia. An "Energy Rally" was held involving students and public officials to highlight the importance of saving energy.
Testimonial:
"The Energy Star Label symbolizes the district's commitment to sound energy management, environmental leadership, and responsible use of tax dollars. We're pleased to be among the highest-rated schools in the country and proud that our team helped us receive the first ENERGY STAR Label for schools in Virginia."
-- Linda Weber, Superintendent of Schools, Roanoke County School District
