Constructed in 1969, Bruns Avenue Elementary has 87,198 square feet of space. The school was renovated in 1998 with more efficient lighting, upgraded pumping, a new boiler, and additional space.

 

Since its renovation, Bruns Avenue has been very consistent in its energy consumption. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools increased communication to schools about energy use during the 2009-2010 school year. Each school receives a monthly report showing energy use for the current and previous years. During the 2009-2010 school year, Bruns Avenue students and staff reduced the school's energy by 7.8 percent.

 

Bruns Avenue is somewhat unusual for Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools, as it has a full-size gym that is used by the County's Parks and Recreation Department when school is not in session, including most weekends. This joint use of property extends the use of the HVAC and lighting equipment in the school.
