Alanton Elementary School opened in 1966 to alleviate the overcrowding at the nearby John B. Dey Elementary School. Since it was first built, an extended library-media center, computer lab, art room, and 10 classrooms have been added to the campus. Today, Alanton Elementary encompasses 74,000 square feet and educates 600 pre-school through 5th grade students with 90 staff members. In 2010, with assistance from the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant from the U.S. Department of Energy, the school division worked with Noresco, an energy performance contractor, to increase energy efficiency. Lighting was replaced with more energy efficient fixtures and occupancy sensors. Water conservation measures were also included.
