In 1998, the Engineering Department of the VA Northern Indiana Health Care System, Fort Wayne Medical Center, undertook a project to convert its existing 52-year-old, labor intensive high-pressure steam distribution system to a more cost-effective low-pressure system. The conversion, which was completed in September 2000, has resulted in a reduction of 19.4% in energy consumption, which yielded a savings in labor and energy costs of $199,000 in 2001, and more than $218,000 in 2002. Based on these results, the project will pay for itself in just 2.78 years, and the medical center will operate much more efficiently in the future.

The Troyer Group, an engineering firm located in Mishawaka, Indiana, was responsible for the initial feasibility study and the resulting construction designs for this project. Current Inc., a local Fort Wayne mechanical contractor, served as general contractor on the project, which was awarded in April 2000. Work progressed steadily through the summer of 2000. The project was successfully completed because of the continuous interaction and involvement of the medical center staff with the designers and the contractors.

"This project was high profile and somewhat controversial; however, it represented a potential savings to the operation of the medical center and was, therefore, warranted. The project employed new technology to operate the boiler plant and report alarms. The use of cell phones and automatic dialers to report alarm conditions was an exceptional use of available and inexpensive technology. And we achieved our goal of becoming more cost effective through energy efficiency."
-- Charles Applewhite, General Engineer, VA NIHCS Engineering Dept., Projects Div.
