The World Headquarters for McDonald's Corporation, known as the Campus Office Building (COB), is a 4-story, 704,000-square-foot facility.  Located in Oak Brook, Illinois, COB was designed by architect Dirk Lohan and is one of three buildings on a well-landscaped wooded office campus site comprising more than 80 acres.  There are two picturesque lakes, 2.5 miles of trails, and more than 3,000 mature trees.

McDonald's Corporation is honored to be a repeat recipient of the ENERGY STAR for the COB building.  When COB was built in 1988, its design and features were well ahead of its time.  It is these design components, combined with subsequent retrofits and upgrades to building mechanical, control, and lighting systems, that allowed COB to earn the ENERGY STAR consecutive years.  In 2001, McDonald's upgraded the building control system and re-commissioned the variable air volume (VAV) boxes that control the flow of air throughout the building.  To aid in energy efficiency during the spring and fall seasons, an economizer cycle is utilized.  The economizer cycle provides free cooling by using outside air to cool the inside of the building.  To also aid in the reduction of energy used to control the climate of the building, variable frequency drives (VFDs) are used on supply fans.  This enables fans to ramp up and down to match the heating and cooling demand.  Finally, the chillers at COB utilize a chilled water reset control that optimizes chiller efficiency.

Efficiency and energy savings have also been realized in the lighting choices at COB.  The upgraded total lighting control system controls multi-zone lighting schedules and enables 50 percent lighting on "McEnergy" (energy alert) days.  The building utilizes high efficiency "green tip" fluorescent fixtures and recessed compact fluorescent lighting in office space, meeting rooms, and common areas. The after-hours lighting can be activated by employees on an hourly basis.  There is currently a pilot in place to test LED lighting applications.  COB also has an open office plan that allows access to more natural light and views of the campus grounds.

Additionally, the building operations team tracks electrical and gas data through utility Web sites, along with heating and cooling degree days as part of an ongoing energy management program.  The Six Sigma Energy Management Team, which consists of both JLL and McDonald's employees, has been tasked with identifying and eliminating energy waste.  They implemented several improvements, which included adding lighting control motion sensors, changing temperature setpoints, and changing after-hours lighting schedules to further reduce consumption. The Six Sigma Energy Management Team will continue to review building operations and processes to identify opportunities to eliminate waste and increase energy efficiency.

In early 2009, McDonald's Corporation received Platinum certification for the COB under the U.S. Green Building Council's (USGBC's) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) for Existing Buildings Rating System.  A building re-commissioning study was completed, and recommendations are being implemented to ensure that the fundamental building systems continue to perform as intended.  Receiving the ENERGY STAR plays a significant role in the LEED-EB certification process, and it will continue to be utilized during and after the performance period to support the applicable LEED prerequisite and credits.

McDonald's USA has been an ENERGY STAR partner for more than 10 years.  The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency named McDonald's a 2007 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year for an energy efficiency program that resulted in a 200,000-ton decrease in carbon dioxide emissions and energy savings of $30 million in U.S. restaurants.


McDonald's Corporation is also creating greater energy and environmental awareness for employees.  For example, during McDonald's Green Week, more than 11,000 CFLs were sold to employees at a discount price, 21 percent of the staff took EPA's Change the World, Start with ENERGY STAR Pledge, and many recycled their cellular items, including phones and batteries. More than 3,000 trees were planted due to donations and a partnership with Green Fleet and American Forests, and more than 400 employees learned new ways to reduce their carbon footprint while picking up free seeds and trees in the process. McDonald's Corporation has also implemented "No Cup Friday."  On "No Cup Friday," all hot and cold beverage cups are removed from the beverage bars, and employees are encouraged to use their own mugs and environmentally friendly reusable water bottles.
