In 2002, Galena Park Independent School District (ISD) became an ENERGY STAR partner and undertook efforts to identify and implement energy-saving measures. Using EPA's Portfolio Manager tool, the district identified the facilities with the most energy-saving potential. To coordinate its efforts, the district also developed a district-wide approach to reducing its energy bills.

Green Valley Elementary School achieved energy efficiency improvements through behavioral and technical changes. Faculty and students turn off lights and equipment that are not being used, and the school organizes a patrol team that works on watching and helping others to consistently conserve energy by sending reminders of conservation tips and strategies. Teachers and students also work together to save energy and adopt environmentally-friendly habits, such as recycling and water conservation. A Building Energy Management system controls the HVAC system, and the school also uses occupancy sensors and photocells to further reduce energy usage. As a result of these efforts, Green Valley Elementary School has reduced its energy use by more than 20 percent since its 2002 baseline year and earned the ENERGY STAR for the first time in 2008.

The school district promotes its successes to the board of education, superintendents, principal of the school, and teachers, as well as the community, and has been commended for its achievements.

"The tools and resources offered through ENERGY STAR have helped our district save money, and we have been able to improve the learning environment for our students at the same time. We were surprised to find so many opportunities to save energy, money, and increase the effectiveness of our facilities. We know the importance and benefits of reducing our energy use, and we hope to continue reducing our footprint/impact on our environment."
