Morrow Hall

Completed in 1923, Morrow Hall was the first women's residence hall at Fairmont State University (FSU).  The building was named in honor of Nancy R. Cameron Morrow, a former acting principal and faculty member.

The original design and construction of the historic building help to increase its energy efficiency; it has 18-inch brick exterior walls, preventing heat loss and heat gain. An asphalt shingle roof system and an ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) system installed in 1998 help increase the building's weather resistance and energy efficiency. Some T-12 ballasts have been converted to T-8 ballasts, sufficiently illuminating the building's interior. Regular scheduled maintenance also allows it to function at its most efficient level.

The Director of Public Relations for FSU developed a press release that was sent to all local news teams and publications. A local television station conducted interviews and aired a news report on FSU's efforts. In addition, the Physical Plant staff delivered a presentation on energy conservation.

"This is part of beginning the green initiative at Fairmont State. Becoming a partner with ENERGY STAR allows us to evaluate ourselves in comparison to other organizations throughout the state and offers FSU access to tools and resources, such as the West Virginia Division of Energy Lighting Grant. We want the community to know that we care about the environment and want to be part of the green effort."

-- Tom Tucker, FSU Physical Plant
