Built in 1962, Greenwood Middle School serves 540 5th through 8th grade students annually.  In 1972, the school was renovated to incorporate a two-story addition with 16 classrooms.

In 2003, Wayne County Public Schools entered into a strategic partnership with Energy Education Inc., an energy conservation consulting firm, to implement energy saving measures.  An energy manager was hired to lead the school's energy conservation efforts, and by conducting building energy audits, the team identified numerous energy saving measures.

In 2006, the boiler was retrofitted to use both natural gas and fuel oil.  In 2009, the school implemented additional efficiency measures, including:

The school's equipment upgrades were made available through a performance contract that was overseen by the school's Maintenance Department and Trane Corporation.  Furthermore, through routine preventative maintenance, the Maintenance Department has ensured that all that all lighting and time clocks work properly and that air filters are changed on a regular basis, providing additional energy savings for the school.

Not only has Greenwood Middle School increased its energy efficiency through physical building upgrades, it has also addressed the potential savings that can be met through behavioral changes. The team has educated its staff on more energy-efficient ways they can operate their classrooms while maintaining the comfort and learning experience of their students.

By both improving equipment efficiency and involving the building occupants in energy saving efforts, Greenwood Middle School earned the ENERGY STAR for superior energy performance.
