Food Lion LLC has one of the most advanced retail energy conservation programs in the country. For nearly a decade, Food Lion has been dedicated to numerous sustainability initiatives, such as energy conservation and reducing carbon dioxide emissions throughout its 11-state footprint. Since 2000, the company's efforts have resulted in a more than 27-percent reduction in energy consumption, or 2.61 trillion BTUs.

Food Lion is proud to have shared the ENERGY STAR journey alongside the U.S. EPA. As the U.S. EPA was shaping the ENERGY STAR program 10 years ago, Food Lion was already working to raise the bar on its own existing energy conservation standards.

These parallel initiatives presented an ideal opportunity for Food Lion and the U.S. EPA to collaborate on reporting tools and benchmarking guidelines. Food Lion test piloted ENERGY STAR initiatives for the EPA, while in turn the EPA brought to the company's attention new opportunities and greater possibilities in energy efficiency.

Today, Food Lion LLC has one of the most advanced energy conservation and sustainability platforms in the grocery industry. In 2009, the company will celebrate earning the ENERGY STAR for superior energy performance for its 900th store. That's more than two-thirds of all of the stores in its chain, and it's more than half of all of the ENERGY STAR qualified grocery stores in the country.

In 2009, Food Lion's 74-million pound reduction in carbon emissions is the equivalent of planting 10,227 acres of trees, powering 3,363 American homes for one year, or the emissions from 7,465 vehicles.

It's because of the help of the U.S. EPA that Food Lion LLC successfully cut its energy consumption by more than a quarter since 2000.
