Montclaire Elementary School
5801 Farmbrook Drive
Charlotte, NC 28210
Map It!

Originally constructed in 1958, Montclaire had additions and renovations in 1964, 1971, and in 1997, growing from its original 38,497 square feet to 49,888 square feet. The school was also part of a performance contract undertaken in 2007. Montclaire has a dual-temperature system, which feeds air handling units for the administration, media center, cafeteria, and multipurpose area. The classroom areas are heated and cooled with fan-coil units.

Through the performance contract, the following energy efficiency measures were implemented:

-- Replaced all the light bulbs with T-8 bulbs.

-- Added a smaller, high efficiency boiler for the milder months.

-- Installed direct digital controls (DDCs).

-- Changed control valves to variable flow from constant flow.

-- Installed variable frequency drives (VFDs) on the dual-temperature pumps.

-- Changed piping.

-- Cleaned all of the dual-temperature coils in the facility.

This school's energy use has declined for the past 3 years. In 2009?2010, Montclaire operated at 52,500 BTUs per square foot. This is better than our district average--and we believe there is even more room for improvement.
