Rosewood Middle School serves approximately 390 6th through 8th grade students annually in Goldsboro, NC.  Originally built in 1923, the facility has undergone numerous renovations and additions over the past several decades.

In 2003, Wayne County Public Schools entered into a strategic partnership with Energy Education Inc., an energy conservation consulting firm, to implement energy saving measures.  An energy manager was hired to head up the school's energy conservation efforts.  Through building audits, the team identified several energy saving measures.

In 2009, the boiler's burner was changed out to facilitate natural gas use.  This equipment upgrade was made available through a performance contract that was overseen by the school's Maintenance Department and Trane Corporation.  Additionally, through routine preventative maintenance, the Maintenance Department has been able to ensure that all air filters are changed on a regular basis and that all lighting and time clocks are working properly, increasing the building's energy savings.

Not only has Rosewood Middle School increased its energy efficiency through physical building upgrades, it has also addressed the potential savings that can be met through behavioral changes. The team has educated its staff on more energy-efficient ways they can operate their classrooms while maintaining the comfort and learning experience of their students.

By both improving equipment efficiency and involving the building occupants in energy saving efforts, Rosewood Middle School earned the ENERGY STAR for superior energy performance.
