Schmucker Middle School serves approximately 1,000 middle school students in the central portion of the Penn Harris Madison School Corporation located in Mishawaka, Indiana. Built in 1968, the 179,000-square-foot building was remodeled in 2000.

In 2007, the Penn Harris Madison School Corporation partnered with Energy Education Inc. to create a people-based energy conservation program that emphasizes changing the habits of building occupants. From the efforts of over 70 dedicated employees at Schmucker, the energy savings have increased from 16 percent during the first year of the program to a high of 35 percent in 2010. The building received the ENERGY STAR in both 2011 and 2012.

In addition to changing the how the equipment is used, there have been a number of equipment improvements over the past few years. More than 320 outdated computers have been replaced with units that have energy-efficient power supplies and flat-screen monitors. The most significant work was done on the Energy Management System (EMS). The EMS was upgraded to a Web-based platform to simplify equipment management. All of items described above, and many others, have helped Schmucker to earn the ENERGY STAR for superior energy performance.
