Foreseeing the need to reduce energy costs, the Metropolitan School District (MSD) of Martinsville began implementing energy management in 1989. Computer controls were installed to schedule the operation of heating and air conditioning units and maintain set temperatures in three of its 18 facilities. Today, the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems in nine facilities are controlled by computers at the Maintenance Department.

In 1996, the school district completed a lighting retrofit in all of its schools and buildings, changing T12 fluorescent lights to T8 or T5 lights, incandescent to halogen capsylites and compact fluorescents, exit lights to LEDs, and all ballasts to energy savers.

An energy policy and plan was introduced at the start of the 2007-08 school year, which included simple guidelines such as turning off unneeded lighting, removing non-essential electrical appliances from classrooms, and shutting off or unplugging all items not in use.

-- Sent monthly energy update reports to the Assistant Superintendent of Business.
-- Sent reports to the Principal detailing the results of facility inspections, as well as direct communication on any areas needing immediate attention or suggestions that may reduce energy usage.
-- Received newspaper coverage on presentation of ENERGY STAR.

"All staff members understand the need to conserve energy and they willingly implemented the District's Energy Plan. Everyone made an extra effort to turn off lights when they were not in the room. They kept their doors closed to keep the heat/ac in the room. All unnecessary appliances were removed."

-- Debbie Wagner, Principal, Brooklyn Elementary School
