An ENERGY STAR partner since 2007, Mesa County Valley School District decided to improve the energy efficiency of its schools to reduce utility costs and maximize the use of its budget. Operating buildings efficiently satisfies the district's strategic aim of using resources responsibly and effectively. By investing avoided utility costs back into building infrastructure and systems, the district also helps ensure that it achieves its mission of providing safe working and learning environments for students and teachers.

In 2007, the district invested $1.2 million in HVAC retrofits at Thunder Mountain Elementary School. The improvement project included five new roof top units with hot water variable air volume (VAV) reheat and variable frequency drives on the fans, efficient building heating boilers, and direct digital controls (DDC).

These HVAC system upgrades have improved occupant comfort tremendously. Given the extremes of the local climate, reliable heating and air conditioning systems are a high priority for the school. The HVAC energy efficiency improvements were combined with operational changes, including the use of override switches and more conservative occupancy scheduling using the DDC system. Because of these improvements, the district avoided $157,000 in utility costs during the 2008 fiscal year. In addition, the school earned the ENERGY STAR for the first time in 2008 for superior energy performance.

The district school board recognized Thunder Mountain's achievement at a school board meeting in December 2008, and the ENERGY STAR plaque was presented to the school principal at a staff meeting. The district also ran an advertisement in the local newspaper, The Grand Junction Daily Sentinel, to inform the community about its achievement and spread the word about the importance of energy efficiency.
