Located in the heart of Land Park, California Middle School was built in 1933. Except for the auditorium and a row of classrooms, the campus was torn down in the late 70's due to the passage of new California Earthquake standards. The new campus was outfitted with chiller cooling, gas heating, and package units. The facility consists of over 40 classrooms, and industrial arts wing, a media center, a full kitchen, auditorium, and gym. During modernization in 1999, all T-12 lighting was changed to T-8 and a new chiller and package units were installed.

Started in 2009, our energy conservation program here at Sacramento City Unified School District has guided California Middle School into consistently recognizing that saving energy everyday is not only good for keeping little resources in our district but also good for our planet.

Staff and students work hard at making sure doors are closed when heat or air is on. Through lighting assessments, excessive lighting has been turned off to conserve energy. Scheduling of run times of electrical equipment has reduced electricity use by 48 percent. Water monitoring of irrigation has reduced consumption by over 24 percent. Natural gas consumption has been reduced by 32 percent. We have been able to achieve a reduction of 46 percent in utility costs.

Through our facilities committee meetings, any future upgrades are to follow ENERGY STAR guidelines for energy-efficient equipment to maintain our ENERGY STAR score. Our District is committed to being a leader in energy conservation through equipment evaluation, upgrade, and commonsense energy-saving practices.
