Built in 1963, Cerro Villa Middle School is the oldest non-modernized middle in the Orange Unified School District (OUSD), not having undergone a major renovation since its construction. With age came special energy efficiency challenges. Like our other schools, the District recognized that there were many energy conversation and efficiency opportunities at Cerro Villa Middle School.

In 2006, the OUSD Board of Education contracted with Energy Education, Inc. and established an energy management program. The program is people based and focuses on changing behaviors. The program relies on staff and students turning off equipment when not in use such as turning off lights in unoccupied rooms, turning off computers at the end of the day, and making sure that heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning equipment is turned off when they leave for the day.

In addition to OUSD's energy management program, the District worked with Chevron Energy Solutions for facility improvements at Cerro Villa Middle School. The improvements include:

-- Upgrading the (HVAC) system.

-- Installing Energy Management System (EMS) controls.

-- Retrofitting interior and exterior lighting.

-- Installing new "push to start" programmable thermostats in our portable buildings.

In recent years, OUSD has participated in energy efficiency programs operated by Southern California Edison (SCE), the district's electric utility provider, to upgrade to or install new high-efficiency equipment. OUSD has also enrolled in two demand response programs coordinated by SCE. These programs have produced hundreds of thousands of dollars in energy credits for voluntarily reducing energy loads during periods of high demand.

The combination of these efforts resulted in Cerro Villa Middle School earning the ENERGY STAR for superior energy performance in 2008.

"Not wasting energy and using resources only when needed is important for all of us. By conserving, we can put the district's dollars to better use...educating children."

-- Lori Davis, Energy Manager, Orange Unified School District
