Founded in 1994, American Axle & Manufacturing (AAM) is a world leader in the design, engineering, testing, validation, and manufacturing of driveline and drivetrain systems and components. AAM's World Headquarters (AAM-WHQ) are located in Detroit, Michigan, often referred to as the automotive capital of the world. Built in 2002, the AAM-WHQ is situated on the same ground as AAM's Detroit Manufacturing Complex, which comprises over 147.5 acres. Since its inception, the 7-story, 219,846-square-foot WHQ building was equipped with state-of-the-art high efficiency systems such as:
T-8 lighting fixtures with electronic ballasts
Task lighting in every cubicle and office
Triple-pane windows to reduce heat loss
Energy management system (EMS)

Operating under the philosophy of continuous improvement and adhering to the AAM Energy Policy, AAM became an ENERGY STAR partner in March 2008 and set a goal of obtaining the ENERGY STAR for the AAM-WHQ. 


According to EPA's Portfolio Manager, the AAM-WHQ building has come a long way since receiving an initial baseline score of 51.


To improve its energy performance and earn the ENERGY STAR, the following energy efficiency projects were implemented without affecting the occupants' comfort or safety conditions:
Reduced the number of lamps per fixture to adjust the lighting level to today's standard by increasing the use of the task lighting fixtures.
Adjusted the lighting schedule to match the demand based on occupied and unoccupied mode.
Installed a fully automated Powerlink lighting control system to eliminate unnecessary lighting during unoccupied mode.
Set up the energy management system to adjust the HVAC schedule to match the building's occupied and unoccupied mode.
Reduced the cooling load and heating load by increasing and reducing the set-point temperature in summer and winter respectively during unoccupied mode.
-- Reduced the set point temperature for hot water without affecting the comfort level of users.
Installed a control system to benefit from the building's thermal mass by cycling the cooling tower and building pumps based on the chilled water and outdoor air temperatures.

The above mentioned projects, along with heightened awareness of energy conservation among AAM associates, have led to a much improved energy performance for the AAM-WHQ and, ultimately, to the ENERGY STAR for superior energy performance.


Achieving the ENERGY STAR for the WHQ will not be an isolated accomplishment in AAM's journey to energy efficiency. AAM is conscious of today's environmental and energy crisis and will continue working to improve its energy performance in all its production and non-production facilities corporate wide.


AAM has designated an Energy Director, a Corporate Energy Team, and Energy Champions that work to create and maintain communication channels to spread the company's success. Some of the tools used to communicate success internally are the Energy Scorecard Report, Energy Newsletter, and Energy Memos.


Since January 2007, AAM has saved over $8 million in energy costs, and this wouldn't be possible without the serious commitment to energy efficiency from the company's Chairman and CEO, who stated: "Every AAM associate must do his part to reduce energy cost by reducing energy consumption at our facilities."
