John W. Mack Elementary School
Map It!

John W. Mack Elementary School (Mack ES) is part of the Los Angeles Unified School District?s current $19.5 billion New School Construction and Modernization Program. Its goal is to provide every student with the opportunity to attend a safe and healthy neighborhood school operating on a traditional, two-semester calendar. For more information, please visit:

Mack ES opened in September 2005 to serve students in South Los Angeles. This two-story elementary school boasts contemporary design with a smooth plaster exterior finish designed by Arquitectonica. To maximize the available space for a student playground and playing field, the school building was built over an underground parking structure. The school incorporates an integrated mix of single-story and two-story structures with 32 classrooms, an administrative wing, a multi-purpose room, lunch shelter, and a library with a multi-media area on a 2.58 acre site.

Mack ES was designed under the Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS) system, which focuses on building design and energy efficiency. Mack ES was design to exceed CA Title 24-2001 energy standard by 10 percent. The site?s energy efficiency features include temperature and lighting controls in all classrooms, as well as operable windows. The school currently serves approximately 470 students.

?By building energy-efficient schools, LAUSD is modeling a new standard in new school construction. Mack Elementary School is an example of how when schools are built right and systems work, we can reduce our energy usage, which benefits both the environment and our bottom line.?
