Canon City, CO 81212
Canon City Schools has been involved in energy efficiency projects for many years, and has been an ENERGY STAR partner since 2008. Recently, the school district was recognized by EPA as an ENERGY STAR Leader for improving the district's overall energy performance by more than 10 percent. The district's energy reduction rate is now at 19.3 percent. The Canon City School District includes nine schools as well as three auxiliary buildings, encompassing a total of 650,000 square feet. These buildings range in age from 1925 to 2006 (built year). Some of the energy efficiency projects the school district has undertaken include extensive preventative maintenance, use of geothermal energy for heating and cooling, thermal storage, lighting retrofits, and new insulation to improve building envelopes. As an active ENERGY STAR partner, the district has been engaged in benchmarking, tracking energy consumption, and understanding energy use within each building. Canon City Schools has reached an average ENERGY STAR rating of 90 for the 10 buildings within its portfolio, earning the district recognition as a Top Performer, and four of the nine schools earned the ENERGY STAR for superior energy performance in 2009. The Canon City School District is the first school district in Colorado to receive this prestigious level of recognition from EPA and ENERGY STAR.
City Middle School was constructed in 1925, making it one of the oldest
structures in the district. This school has undergone several energy
conservation improvements over the years. New energy-efficient windows were added
in the mid-1980s. A lighting retrofit was completed in 1998, including
de-lamping and adding electronic ballasts and T-8 lamps. In 2004, new boilers
for heating and domestic water use were installed, as well as the addition of
some direct digital controls (DDCs). In 2008, a geothermal heat pump system was
installed, mainly to add cooling to the classrooms. 2008 also brought the
installation of a 100kW solar photovoltaic (PV) system (installed 2009,
operational in 2010). As of the end of 2010, the PV system had generated 135,439
kW, with an offset of 169,300 lbs or 85 tons of carbon dioxide emissions.
